In 2021, the Methanol-to-Olefins process used around 33.6 million metric tons of methanol, becoming the main application for the petrochemical product. In this process, methanol is converted to olefins such as ethylene and propylene. Ranking second was the production of formaldehyde, which required more than 25 million metric tons of methanol that year. In 2022, the global production of methanol was estimated at over 111 million metric tons.
